MY PERSONAL STORY

I am daughter of a chronic pain survivor. Here’s my story of what got me interested in researching and becoming a #Nutrition4PAIN expert.

My mother is my WHY I became so interested in pursuing nutrition and becoming a nutrition for pain advocate! Growing up I watched my mom standing and cooking in the kitchen for only 15-20 mins and then lying down on the bed. Then she would get up again and cook the rest of the meal and again lie down. I didn’t understand why? She would go to the kitchen to make a full meal, but would pick up whatever was easy to cook and would cook a small meal, instead. I would wonder why, but as a kid didn’t understand any of her actions.

We would make plans to go watch a movie in the theater and she would say, “You guys go with your dad.” I felt disappointed because I wanted to spend time with both my parents and not just with my dad. Of course, I love my dad and went on daddy daughter dates growing up but it was a different feeling when the whole family went to the movie theater together. So, when I got too emotional and teary eyed (quite often), my mother would pop pills to get relief from her chronic back pain, put on a BIG smile on her face, and tag along. As a kid, this would make me extremely happy. At the time, I didn’t understand what my mother was going through due to her debilitating chronic back pain. I did not understand the negative consequences of taking opioids for pain management.

My mother also went through a really serious phase of depression – which led to a whole host of other issues – overeating unhealthy foods and weight gain, guilt surrounding her food choices, chronic inflammation, leaky gut, and much more. It was just a never ending viscous cycle.

She went to doctors after doctors, tried acupuncture, acupressure, healing, massage therapy, and a million other things that certainly provided her with temporary relief but who knew that “we are what we eat” was going to hold true for my mom. 10 years back or even now, not one talks about the role of nutrition in pain management. Everyone talks about pain meds and complimentary manual therapies, but what about the role of nutrition in healing chronic pain?

So, when I was doing my masters degree in nutrition, I learned a lot about the role of anti-inflammatory diet in chronic pain, inflammatory and auto-immune diseases, weight loss, mood and depression, and gut healing. I read a lot of research papers and completed a research study using evidence based tools and strategies. When I worked at various chiropractor and physiotherapy clinics, I noticed no one was talking about nutrition. It was all about relieving pain through manual therapy, which works for sure – but the question is for how long and what about your relationship with food, your struggles with weight, depression and guilt surrounding your eating habits, and your pro-inflammatory dietary choices. AHA – the missing piece of the puzzle.

Jenifer’s favorite foods are eggs, okra, mutton pulao, avocados, barley, nut butter and a variety of home-made street style tacos. Jenifer’s favorite indulgences include morning cardomom chai latte, golden turmeric milk,  and dark chocolate with roasted almonds.
